CRTC تمنح إعفاء Corus بشأن لوائح إنفاق المحتوى الكندي • Phones Canada News

Phones Canada is excited to share the latest news from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) regarding Corus Entertainment’s recent approval request. As of May 13, 2024, Corus will see a reduction in its Canadian content spending requirements from 8.5% to 5% of revenue.

Corus, known as the largest provider of independent programming in the country, submitted a proposal last fall seeking a decrease in spending obligations for programs of national interest (PNI) and Canadian programming expenditures (CPE) for its English language television stations and discretionary services.

The CRTC carefully reviewed this request and found it to be both reasonable and tailored to Corus’ unique circumstances within the broadcasting sector. The decision aims to strike a balance between supporting Canadian programming and recognizing the financial challenges faced by broadcasters. The Commission emphasized Corus’ significant role in the broadcasting system, which influenced their decision to approve the application.

In line with this approval, the CRTC has mandated that any reduction in PNI expenditures by Corus must be counteracted by increased spending on other forms of Canadian programming. This adjustment is part of the CRTC’s broader efforts to modernize Canada’s broadcasting framework, including delaying the implementation of the Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11) until after the upcoming federal election next year.

Corus, founded by the Shaw family, also offers its content through StackTV, an online streaming service that includes ads despite being a paid service. The CRTC noted that it is considering this application due to Corus’ unique regulatory status and its overall importance to the broadcasting system.

Phones Canada is pleased to share this update with our readers as we continue to monitor developments in Canada’s telecommunications industry. Stay tuned for more news and updates on our blog!
