Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has recently appointed Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino as CEOs of PlayStation, marking a new era for the gaming giant. These two industry veterans will be taking on key roles within PlayStation’s core businesses starting June 1st, 2024.
Hermen Hulst, known for co-founding Guerrilla Games and leading PlayStation Studios, will now head the newly named Studio Business Group. This group will oversee all PlayStation first-party studios and the development of PlayStation IP in TV and film. Hulst expressed his excitement about leading the studio business group and continuing to push the boundaries of play and entertainment.
On the other hand, Hideaki Nishino has been appointed as CEO of the Platform Business Group. In this role, he will be responsible for overseeing console hardware development, technology, accessories, PlayStation Network, and third-party relations. Nishino’s extensive experience within Sony Network Entertainment and SIE makes him well-equipped to drive innovation in every area at Sony Interactive Entertainment.
This move marks a significant shift in SIE’s leadership structure by appointing co-CEOs to run PlayStation for the first time in its history. Both Hulst and Nishino will report to Sony CFO and SIE chairman Hiroki Totoki moving forward. This strategic decision is aimed at building incredible experiences for an ever-expanding audience now and in the future.
In light of these changes, Sony also released its latest fiscal year earnings report for 2023. The report indicates a decline in PlayStation 5 console sales by 29 percent year-over-year. Despite falling short of its target with 20.8 million units sold during FY23, Sony remains optimistic about its future prospects with a revised target of 18 million units for FY24.
