Epic Games and Match Group vs Google Lawsuit: Court Date Set for November 6th

Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, has been involved in a significant legal battle with Apple over the past few years. However, they have also taken on Google in a similar lawsuit alongside Match Group. According to reports from Engadget, the lawsuit now has a court date.

The main focus of the lawsuit is on the unfair fees and requirements for in-app purchases, which is similar to Epic’s previous lawsuit against Apple. Both Epic Games and Match Group accuse Google, the tech giant based in Mountain View, of abusing its control of Android app distribution. This lawsuit is happening in conjunction with another similar lawsuit filed by 39 attorneys general. Additionally, there is a customer class action lawsuit seeking $4.7 billion in damages.

In 2020, Epic first sued Google, similar to Apple’s case, after Fortnite was removed from the Play Store, just like it was removed from Apple’s App Store. Match Group, an online dating service company, also sued Google last year due to the “exorbitant” store fees. The two companies decided to consolidate their cases and expanded their allegations last fall.

One of the new allegations is that Google is paying significant amounts of money to major developers to keep their apps exclusively on the Play Store. However, Google denies abusing its power and argues that the fees are necessary to maintain and invest in the Play Store. They also highlight that developers are not prohibited from launching third-party app stores, and Google believes that the Play Store competes fairly.

As with any trial of this magnitude, it may take a long time before a final decision is reached. We will continue to provide updates on the progress of the lawsuit.
