It has been reported by TF International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple is planning to upgrade the front-facing FaceTime camera for next year’s iPhone 17 series. This upgrade is expected to result in a revenue increase for Genius, which is Apple’s primary supplier for the lens used on the iPhone’s FaceTime camera. The upgrade will involve increasing the front-facing camera from the current 12MP to 24MP, as well as using a six-element lens instead of the five-element lens used in previous models. This improvement is expected to enhance the quality of video chats and images captured using the FaceTime camera. The cost of the six-element lens is also expected to be 100% to 120% higher than the cost of the previous lens.
In addition, it is expected that the iPhone 16 Pro models will feature a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and the Tetraprism periscope zoom will appear on both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro. Largan remains the main supplier of the periscope lens, but Genius will also be supplying the two iPhone 16 Pro series models with periscope lenses. Furthermore, Genius will be the exclusive supplier of the ultra-wide lens for the iPhone 16 Pro series, which will be upgraded to 48MP.
Genius is also set to be the exclusive supplier of the flat, thin “pancake lens” used on the Vision Pro, and will deliver the ultra-wide lens for Huawei’s upcoming new P70 flagship series. Although Kuo’s track record may have dropped off slightly, his insights into Apple’s plans are still valuable.
