meta responds to backlash new ai content labels for photographers

Meta recently implemented new policies on Facebook and Instagram regarding AI-generated content. One of the key changes introduced was the addition of a “Made with AI” watermark to identify such content. However, many photographers worldwide raised concerns as their images were labeled with this watermark even for minor modifications.

Acknowledging the issue, Meta admitted that their labeling system did not always meet users’ expectations and lacked sufficient context. To address this, they have updated the label to “AI info” to differentiate content with minor AI modifications, like retouching tools.

In line with the Oversight Board’s recommendation to provide transparency and additional context, Meta decided to keep such content on their platforms. Users can now click on the “AI info” label to access more information about the image, helping them distinguish between AI-generated content and original content modified using AI tools.

Moving forward, Meta will extend the “AI info” label to a broader range of media types, including videos and audio files. This label will be applied when industry-standard AI indicators are detected or when users disclose that they are uploading AI-generated content.

As technology advances and more individuals utilize AI for various purposes, Meta is likely to continue refining its policies around AI-generated content. The goal is to ensure clarity and transparency while also preventing unnecessary restrictions on freedom of speech.
