Google’s upcoming Pixel 9 series will be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset, as revealed by tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve). Contrary to previous rumors, Samsung Foundry will be responsible for manufacturing the component, not TSMC. Although Google initially offered the job to TSMC, the company declined due to low volume. As a result, Samsung Foundry will continue its partnership with Google and produce the Tensor G4, following its work on the previous three Google Tensor SoCs.
The Tensor G4 is expected to feature a Cortex-X4 prime core, Cortex-A715 performance CPU cores, Cortex-A520 efficiency CPU cores, and Arm’s Immortalis-G715 GPU. The exact configuration is yet to be disclosed, but the chip will be built on Samsung Foundry’s 4LPP+ process node. This process node is an improvement over the 4LPP node used for the Tensor G3. It is worth noting that the Exynos 2400 will also utilize the same process node.
While some may speculate that Google’s decision to work with Samsung Foundry indicates confidence in the company’s ability to overcome yield issues and prevent overheating, the reality is that Google had limited options after TSMC’s refusal. Intel could have been an alternative since it recently entered the contract foundry business. However, Intel’s 4nm chips, which boast higher transistor density than Samsung’s, have just started mass production.
According to Revegnus, the Tensor G4 will be manufactured by Samsung Foundry next year, followed by the TSMC-built Tensor G5 in 2025. Time will tell whether this prediction holds true. Rest assured, we will keep you updated with any further developments on the subject.
