This feature may have been brought back to attract customers to the more expensive Pixel 8 Pro model. The Pixel 8 Pro will have the option to shoot astrophotography at 1x (standard), 2x, and .5x (ultra-wideband). It seems that ultra-wide astrophotography will be limited to the Pixel 8 Pro as it may not be backward compatible with older models.
