It\u2019s Friday, so it\u2019s time to kick back and check out the third \u201cWorst in Show\u201d awards by iFixit!<\/span><\/p>\n

They scan and select the most outrageous products from the annual CES forum and \u201caward\u201d them in various categories, like \u201cPrivacy\u201d, \u201cSecurity\u201d, \u201cRepairability\u201d and\u2026 \u201cEnshittification\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnshittification\u201d is the word of 2023, according to the American Dialect Society. As Wikipedia puts it, Enshittification is also known as platform decay \u2013 the pattern of decreasing quality of online platforms that act as two-sided markets.<\/p>\n

Back to the \u201cWorst in Show\u201d awards. The judges from iFixit handed them out based on product-related questions like \u201cHow bad is this product?\u201d, \u201cAre the problems with this gadget innovatively bad?\u201d, \u201cHow much do the negatives outweigh the positives?\u201d, and more.<\/p>\n

The trouble with the earbuds<\/h2>\n

In the \u201cRepairability\u201d category, iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens selects the anti-award for the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 earbuds.\u201cIf you spend $300 on a set of headphones, you expect it to last. Particularly if it\u2019s from Sennheiser, the stalwart brand known for bulletproof, long-lasting over-the-ear headphones\u201d, he says.<\/p>\n

The problem is that \u201cJust like almost every other True Wireless earbud, these contain three separate batteries. The bud cells will fail after two years of regular use. Sennheiser does not sell replacement batteries, and internet forums are replete with people complaining that the company won\u2019t repair them\u201d.<\/p>\n

What else is \u201cthe worst\u201d?<\/h2>\n

Okay, this one isn\u2019t what you\u2019d call a piece of \u201cmobile technology\u201d, but it\u2019s hilarious \u2013 again, it\u2019s Friday, so don\u2019t take things too seriously.<\/p>\n

In the \u201cWho Asked for This?\u201d category the \u201cwinner\u201d is\u2026 Instacart AI-powered smart sarts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see 10,000 ads per day, but that\u2019s not enough for Instacart! Their new \u201cAI-powered\u201d shopping cart with a display screen tracks what you buy and shows you curated ads\u2026 er, \u201cexperiences\u201d to \u201cconnect\u201d with brands. It uses historic shopping behavior to push junk foods you\u2019ve bought before.
