In 2022, Phones Canada is excited to share the latest news about an innovative partnership between SpaceX and T-Mobile. This collaboration combines SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation with T-Mobile’s wireless network to offer connectivity in remote areas where traditional telecommunication services may be unavailable.
Earlier this year, T-Mobile customers were delighted to discover that they now have access to satellite messaging on their smartphones. And now, thanks to a recent FCC filing by SpaceX, we have learned that the Direct to Cell service is set to launch in the US this fall.
In the filing, SpaceX expressed gratitude to the FCC for their flexible regulatory framework for supplemental coverage from space (SCS). However, they have also requested the commission to adopt band-specific limits for a more enhanced service experience, broader coverage, and increased choices for consumers.
Here are some key points about the upcoming Direct to Cell service:
– Most phones on T-Mobile’s network will be compatible with the service, eliminating the need for additional hardware.
– A new network will be established utilizing Starlink’s satellites through T-Mobile’s mid-band spectrum.
– The service aims to offer comprehensive coverage in areas where you can see the sky.
Initially, only text messaging will be supported through the service. Users will have the freedom to text anyone they desire, not just emergency responders. Voice and data services are expected to be introduced next year.
SpaceX currently has over 6,000 Starlink satellites orbiting Earth to ensure consistent service delivery. The company plans to deploy nearly 800 satellites capable of direct-to-cell connections in orbit within the next few months.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration between SpaceX and T-Mobile as we look forward to bringing you reliable connectivity wherever you go!
