Google has announced that it is expanding the availability of Face Unlock on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Previously, this feature was only used for unlocking the device, but now it can also be used for Google Pay, banking, and other app sign-ins.
This upgrade is made possible by the Tensor G3 chip and advanced machine learning algorithms. Google was previously unable to achieve Class 3 biometric classification without a LiDAR sensor, but that has changed now.
Face Unlock on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro uses sensors and software to create a 3D map of your face. This map is securely stored on your device and is used to verify your identity when unlocking the device or signing into an app.
Google states that Face Unlock on the Pixel 8 series is now more secure than ever. Thanks to the Tensor G3 chip and advanced machine learning algorithms, it meets the highest Android biometric standard.
This is a significant improvement for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users. Previous Pixel models did not have this feature available, except for the Pixel 4, which included dedicated hardware like an IR camera. Users will no longer need to rely on fingerprint authentication for making payments, adding convenience without compromising security.
