Virginia is set to join the growing list of states banning cell phone usage in classrooms, with Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Executive Order 33 leading the charge. This initiative aims to create a more focused learning environment while still allowing for necessary communication in emergencies or for pick-up schedules.

The Virginia Department of Education, in collaboration with other health departments, will define what constitutes a “cell phone-free education.” Schools may need to provide pouches or lockers for phones, allowing limited access for essential family communication only.

Research from the American Psychological Association supports this move, showing a 100% higher mental health risk for children spending over three hours a day on social media. With kids currently averaging almost five hours daily on their phones, it’s clear that action is needed to protect their well-being.

Aside from the mental health benefits, restricting cell phone use in classrooms can also improve academic performance. Studies have shown that students who use their phones during class are more distracted, learn less effectively, and ultimately achieve lower grades.

To support this initiative, Virginia has allocated $500,000 towards mental health programs and implementing best practices for limiting phone use in schools. Public feedback will shape age-appropriate policies through listening sessions, with final guidelines expected by September 16 and full implementation before January 1, 2025.
