However, the default setting for this feature has led to some awkward moments during important work meetings or other video sessions that require a more serious tone. Recognizing this issue, Apple is taking steps to address it by introducing a new API alongside the upcoming iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 updates. This API will give developers of video conferencing apps the option to disable gesture-based reactions within their applications by default.
It’s worth noting that users can currently disable the Effects feature during a FaceTime call by swiping down to Control Center, tapping ‘Effects’, and then disabling ‘Reactions’. While this is a temporary solution, many believe that this feature should have been turned off by default from the start.
As part of its ongoing updates, Apple recently released iOS 17.3.1 for iPhone and iPad, alongside macOS 14.3.1 and watchOS 10.3.1. Additionally, developers have already gained access to iOS 17.4 beta 2 earlier this week.
