Apple has finally approved the Epic Games Store for iOS in the EU after a long battle between the two tech giants. This approval comes after Epic Games was kicked out of the App Store for attempting to bypass Apple’s in-app purchase platform, which charged a commission on every transaction.
The European Commission’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) has forced Apple to allow third-party app storefronts on iOS in the EU. Despite previous rejections, Apple has now given the green light for the Epic Games Store to be available on iPhones in the 27 EU member countries.
Initially, Apple had concerns about certain buttons in the Epic Games Store app that could confuse users and make them think they were created by Apple. However, Epic argued that it followed standard conventions and used similar button layouts on other platforms.
Apple has requested that Epic make some adjustments to these buttons in their next submission but has ultimately approved the app for inclusion on iOS devices. This decision marks a significant shift for Apple, as they typically do not back down easily from such disputes.
Epic is still working on finalizing its app for iOS but is now closer than ever to achieving its goal of launching the Epic Games Store on iPhones. This recent development should streamline the process for Epic and bring them one step closer to reaching millions of new users through Apple’s ecosystem.
