Attention : les applications et sites Web frauduleux drainent $4,3 millions d'utilisateurs d'iPhone et d'Android au Canada

In the world of cryptocurrencies, security is paramount. Both iPhone and Android users must be cautious and ensure they do not fall victim to fake Crypto Wallet apps. Trend Micro recently identified 249 fake apps that have led to the theft of over $4.3 million from unsuspecting users. These fraudulent apps masquerade as legitimate cryptocurrency wallet apps, tricking users into unknowingly installing malware on their devices.

The attackers behind these fake apps employ a clever tactic to evade detection. By sending out emails with malicious links to potential victims, they can direct users to download their malware-laden apps without having to list them on official app stores like the App Store or Google Play Store. These emails often pretend to be from real crypto wallet companies, claiming that the user’s current app version is outdated and prompting them to click on the link to install the supposed latest version.

To further deceive users, hackers create fake websites that closely resemble those of legitimate crypto wallet providers. These sites appear high in search results and are designed to lure in unsuspecting victims who may be seeking support or updates for their crypto wallets.

Trend Micro’s Threat Research team discovered these fake apps on devices in countries like the United States, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. The malicious apps and websites aim to steal users’ mnemonic phrases, which are crucial for recovering lost or damaged cryptocurrency wallets.

Once a victim enters their mnemonic phrase into a fake app or website, hackers can gain access to their funds and transfer them to disposable wallets. In one instance alone, $4.3 million passed through a disposable wallet linked to these scams.

To protect yourself from falling prey to such schemes, follow these tips from Trend Micro:

– Only download crypto wallet apps from trusted sources like Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
– If you notice any suspicious activity during an app update, stop the process immediately and uninstall the app.
– When transferring funds for the first time using a crypto wallet app, start with a small amount to confirm its legitimacy.

By staying vigilant and taking precautions when dealing with cryptocurrency transactions, you can safeguard your digital assets from falling into the hands of malicious actors. Stay safe and secure in your crypto endeavors!
