Currently, initiating a chat with Gemini in Google Messages requires tapping the “Start chat” button and then selecting Gemini from a list of options. However, with this potential new update, users may soon find a Gemini logo button above the “Start chat” button for quicker access to the conversation interface.

The discovery of this feature was made through an APK teardown of the app version messages.android_20240610_01_RC00. By simply tapping on the new Gemini button, users can immediately begin typing their prompts without delay.

In screenshots showcasing this new feature, it is interesting to note that the Gemini button appears smaller in size compared to the existing “Start chat” button. Whether this size discrepancy is intentional or unintentional remains unclear.

Although seemingly a minor adjustment, this change could have a significant impact on user engagement with Gemini. By enhancing accessibility and visibility of the chatbot, Google may be able to encourage more users to interact with Gemini and explore its capabilities.

This update aligns with Google’s overarching strategy to integrate Gemini across its product ecosystem. The company has already introduced Gemini in various apps and services like Gemini 1.5 Pro in Gemini Advanced and YouTube Music’s Gemini Extension. The addition of a dedicated button in Google Messages underscores Google’s commitment to making Gemini an integral part of the user experience.

While beta users have not yet received access to this new feature, it is expected to be rolled out soon. With this enhancement, Google aims to enhance the seamless and intuitive nature of conversations with Gemini, ultimately driving higher adoption rates and increased usage of the AI chatbot on their messaging platform.
