Phones Canada is excited to share the news that Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, has recently acquired the messaging app Beeper. Founded by Canadian Eric Migicovsky, known for the Pebble smartwatch, Beeper gained attention for its innovative approach to messaging.
One notable feature of Beeper was its Beeper Mini app, which allowed Android users to access iMessage and communicate with Apple users. This sparked a bit of a showdown with Apple, but ultimately resulted in Beeper being acquired by Automattic for a reported $125 million USD.
During its beta phase, Beeper attracted over 115,000 users and supported messaging across 14 different networks. Now under Automattic’s umbrella, Beeper’s CEO Migicovsky will take on the role of Head of Messaging within the company.
With plans to merge teams and products under the Beeper brand, Migicovsky expressed his enthusiasm for the future of chat apps. He emphasized Automattic’s commitment to becoming the “best chat app on Earth” and highlighted the potential for growth in this space.
Following this acquisition, Beeper’s free chat app has officially launched out of beta and is now available to all users. Stay tuned as we anticipate exciting developments from this collaboration between Beeper and Automattic.
