Apple Allows Apps to Turn Off Hand Gesture Effects in Video Calls – iPhone in Canada News

Apple’s latest iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma introduced an exciting feature that allows users to add 3D effects to their video calls using hand gestures. With this new addition, FaceTime and other video conferencing apps can now display visual effects like fireworks or confetti when specific hand signs are made, such as a thumbs-up.

However, the default setting for this feature has led to some awkward moments during important work meetings or other video sessions that require a more serious tone. Recognizing this issue, Apple is taking steps to address it by introducing a new API alongside the upcoming iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 updates. This API will give developers of video conferencing apps the option to disable gesture-based reactions within their applications by default.

It’s worth noting that users can currently disable the Effects feature during a FaceTime call by swiping down to Control Center, tapping ‘Effects’, and then disabling ‘Reactions’. While this is a temporary solution, many believe that this feature should have been turned off by default from the start.

As part of its ongoing updates, Apple recently released iOS 17.3.1 for iPhone and iPad, alongside macOS 14.3.1 and watchOS 10.3.1. Additionally, developers have already gained access to iOS 17.4 beta 2 earlier this week.

Stay tuned for more updates on these developments as we continue to monitor Apple’s progress in improving the user experience for video calls and conferencing applications!
