Unlocking the Power of Google’s ‘Gemma’ AI Models for Telecommunications Developers • Phones Canada Blog

Google has recently introduced Gemma, a new suite of open AI models aimed at providing developers and researchers with cutting-edge tools for creating AI applications responsibly. These models, developed by Google DeepMind and various Google teams, draw inspiration from the Gemini models and are named after the Latin word for “precious stone”.

Gemma models come in two sizes: Gemma 2B and Gemma 7B, available in pre-trained and instruction-tuned variants. The lightweight design of these models makes them accessible for use on developers’ laptops, desktops, and Google Cloud platforms.

In addition to the models’ adaptability and performance, Google also introduced a Responsible Generative AI Toolkit alongside Gemma to assist developers in creating safer AI applications. These models are optimized for a wide range of AI hardware platforms, ensuring top-tier performance. They are compatible with major frameworks like JAX, PyTorch, and TensorFlow through native Keras 3.0, and integrate with popular tools such as Hugging Face, MaxText, NVIDIA NeMo, and TensorRT-LLM.

Keeping in line with Google’s AI Principles, Gemma models incorporate automated techniques to filter out sensitive data from training sets and have undergone extensive fine-tuning and evaluations to align with responsible behaviors. The Responsible Generative AI Toolkit provides resources for safety classification, model debugging, and best practices for model builders.

To support the launch of Gemma, Google is offering free access on Kaggle, a free tier for Colab notebooks, and $300 in credits for new Google Cloud users. Additionally, researchers may be eligible for up to $500,000 US in credits to support their projects.

This new development from Google is set to revolutionize the field of AI application development by providing powerful yet responsible tools that can be accessed by developers across various platforms. With its lightweight design and compatibility with popular frameworks and tools, Gemma is expected to have a significant impact on the future of AI technology.
