Uber is inviting Canadians to join their “One Less Car” trial, encouraging participants to reduce their reliance on personal vehicles in favor of alternative transportation methods. With over 26 million private cars on Canadian roads, this initiative aims to make a positive impact on the environment and traffic congestion.
In this trial, Uber is looking for 40 residents from Toronto and Vancouver to give up their cars for a month and share their experiences. Participants will receive up to $1,300 to use on various transportation options available through the Uber app. The trial will also include 135 participants from the United States.
Key details about the “One Less Car” trial include:
– Trial period: July 22 to August 25
– Application deadline: July 7
– Transportation options: public transit, car rentals, rideshares, Lime e-bikes, and e-scooters
– Partnership with the Behavioural Insights Team for behavioral insights
Participants will receive a stipend of up to $1,300 CAD from Uber, distributed as follows:
– $525 in Uber Cash for Uber Rides and Lime e-bikes/scooters
– $250 voucher for Uber car rentals
– $525 for other transportation modes like public transit
– Free one-month Uber One membership with perks
In Vancouver, participants will receive $650 in Uber Cash and $400 for other transportation modes like public transit. A similar trial conducted in Australia in 2023 saw a significant shift towards alternative transport methods, indicating a positive impact on reducing car usage.
Uber’s spokesperson highlighted that these trials aim to reshape how people view car ownership and create greener and less congested urban spaces. The “One Less Car” initiative aligns with Uber’s vision of shared mobility that is electric, multi-modal, and occasionally car-free.
