According to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max/Ultra models will come equipped with Qualcomm’s latest 5G modem. This modem, known as the Snapdragon X75 5G modem, will bring faster and more power-efficient 5G connectivity to users. It will offer both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G coverage using one transceiver, resulting in a 20% reduction in battery usage.
The Snapdragon X75 5G modem, introduced by Qualcomm in February, utilizes carrier aggregation technology to combine multiple carriers and enhance data speeds and capacity. It is also designed to occupy 25% less space on the iPhone’s circuit board compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon X70.
Unlike previous iPhone generations where all models shared the same modem chip, Pu believes that Apple will follow its approach for the A-series application processor. This means only the iPhone 16 Pro series will be equipped with the Snapdragon X75 5G modem chip, while the non-Pro models (iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus) will continue using the Snapdragon X70 5G modem chip.
It is worth noting that Apple recently signed a deal with Qualcomm, securing a steady supply of Qualcomm’s 5G modem chips until 2026. This agreement comes as Apple faced challenges in developing its own 5G modem chips.
It is anticipated that the iPhone 16 Pro line will be marketed as “5G Advanced,” denoting its compatibility with the next generation of 5G connectivity, progressing towards 6G technology.
