According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 release is expected to be one of the most significant updates in the company’s history. When asked about the changes users can expect, Gurman highlighted AI integration as the main focus, especially with an upgraded Siri.
The codename for the next iPhone operating system version is Crystal, and in addition to AI, the update is expected to bring ambitious changes across the board. While specific features and changes have not been revealed, reports suggest that Apple is working on revamping Siri to deeply implement AI capabilities, similar to recent efforts by Samsung and Google.
The goal is to incorporate AI into as many services as possible to enhance user experience, including auto-generating audio playlists, improving productivity apps, and enhancing security and performance. Apple plans to adopt a combined approach, processing some tasks on the device and offloading advanced functions to the cloud.
Notably, Apple’s focus on generative AI is not only in response to industry trends but also as a way to compensate for less exciting hardware improvements in the upcoming iPhone 16. iOS 18 is expected to be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with a likely release date in September.
