Minister of Rural Economic Development, Gudie Hutchings emphasized the necessity of high-speed Internet in today’s digital age, highlighting its essential role in fostering growth and opportunity for communities both large and small. The funding commitment will bring improved connectivity to more than 18,600 underserved homes in Northern Ontario, demonstrating a tangible impact on residents’ daily lives.
While traditional fiber optic infrastructure remains a primary focus for expanding Internet access, some may question the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of alternative solutions like SpaceX Starlink. However, the current investment in projects like ROCK Networks—a PomeGran group company—aims to connect over 60 communities along the north shore of Lake Huron, benefiting thousands of households including Indigenous families. This strategic approach aligns with broader goals set by both levels of government to ensure universal access to high-speed Internet by specific timelines.
As part of these efforts, the federal government aims to achieve nationwide connectivity by 2030, with a target of 98% coverage by 2026. Similarly, the Ontario government is working diligently towards providing reliable high-speed Internet access to every community within the province by the end of 2025. These collective initiatives underscore a shared commitment to bridging the digital divide and creating opportunities for all Canadians to thrive in an increasingly connected world.
