Sony and Samsung are two major players in the smartphone industry when it comes to CMOS image sensors. However, according to the well-respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Samsung is set to supply Apple with image sensors for the iPhone starting in 2026.

Kuo predicts that Samsung will provide Apple with 1/2.6-inch 48MP ultra-wide CMOS image sensors for the iPhone 18 Pro models in the future. This collaboration marks a significant shift as Sony has been the exclusive supplier of image sensors to Apple for years. Samsung has even established a dedicated team to work closely with Apple on this venture.

Despite initially partnering with Intel for modem chips, Apple was unable to meet its deadline for producing a 5G modem chip. Consequently, Apple settled all litigation and licensed Qualcomm’s chips for its iPhones.

Looking ahead, Kuo predicts that Apple will continue its move away from Qualcomm by introducing its in-house 5G chips in upcoming models like the iPhone SE4 and iPhone 17. While there were delays in launching these components earlier, it seems like Apple is now on track to implement its proprietary technology sooner than anticipated.
