Google is currently testing a new widget hub called “Collections” within the Play Store, aimed at helping users discover new apps. This feature, previously known as “Cubes,” has been in development for some time and appears to be getting closer to its official release.

In the latest Google Play Store beta version (41.6.26), users can get a sneak peek of what Collections might look like by long-pressing the Play Store icon. This action opens a context menu where Collections can be found, offering categories like “Watch,” “Read,” “Listen,” “Shop,” and “Social,” each leading to a curated selection of apps within that category.

What makes Collections unique is its curated approach. Google is partnering with select apps to be featured within these categories, aiming to address the common issue of app discovery fatigue among users. The overwhelming task of scrolling through endless lists of apps in the Play Store can make it difficult for users to identify which ones are worth downloading. With Collections, users can access a refined selection of high-quality apps tailored to their needs and interests.

Initially, access to Collections may be limited geographically, with indications that it could first launch in the United States before expanding to other countries in the future. This controlled rollout allows Google to gather user feedback and make necessary improvements before introducing Collections on a broader scale.

Although still in development, screenshots suggest that Collections is a work in progress with an official rollout date yet to be confirmed. Hopefully, this feature will become widely available soon for all users to enjoy seamless app discovery within the Play Store.
