The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) recently announced a new initiative to enhance cellphone service along a 70-kilometre stretch of Highway 37 in northern British Columbia. This project, funded through the CRTC’s Broadband Fund, will see the construction of new cell towers by Rogers, ultimately improving connectivity and access to emergency services for communities and travelers in the region.
Vicky Eatrides, Chairperson and CEO of the CRTC, emphasized the importance of high-quality communication services in people’s daily lives. She stated, “Today, we are taking action to help improve cellphone services for communities and travelers along Highway 37 in northern B.C.” The project has received support from the Chiefs of the Tahltan Band Council and the Iskut Band Council, recognizing the significant impact improved cell service will have on regional economic activities and overall community well-being.
The CRTC Broadband Fund, established in 2019, has been instrumental in expanding high-speed internet access to underserved rural areas. With over $300 million committed to date for internet and cellphone service enhancements in more than 230 communities, the fund continues to make a positive difference in bridging digital divides across Canada.
Key highlights of this initiative include:
– Improved cellphone service along Highway 37 in northern British Columbia
– Construction of new cell towers by Rogers funded through the CRTC Broadband Fund
– Support from local Indigenous communities for enhanced connectivity benefits
– Continued efforts by the CRTC to expand high-speed internet access nationwide
