EU Declares X Harmful for Marketing Blue Checkmarks • Phones Canada Insider

The European Commission has announced its preliminary findings that X, formerly known as Twitter, may have breached the Digital Services Act. After an in-depth investigation, including reviewing internal documents and expert interviews, the Commission found issues with X’s practices:

– The interface for “verified accounts” with the “Blue checkmark” may mislead users by allowing anyone to obtain a verified status.
– X fails to comply with transparency requirements for advertising set by the DSA, hindering transparency for users.
– The platform does not provide necessary access to public data for researchers as required by the DSA.

These findings have been communicated to X for review and response before any final decision is made. If confirmed, X could face fines up to 6% of its global annual revenue and corrective measures.

The Commission has also introduced a whistleblower tool to aid in monitoring compliance by VLOPs, with other platforms like TikTok, AliExpress, and Meta also under investigation.
