Exciting News: Epic Games Launching Fortnite in EU on Apple App Store!

Epic Games, a leading player in the gaming industry, has been at the forefront of challenging tech giants like Apple and Google. Despite not coming out on top in their legal battle with Apple, Epic successfully prompted significant changes to the App Store rules in the EU. This all began with Fortnite, a popular game that sparked a heated dispute.

In 2020, Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games, criticized Apple and Google for taking a hefty 30 percent cut from app purchases on their respective stores. This led Epic to make adjustments to Fortnite’s payment system in an attempt to bypass Apple’s fees. As a result, Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store, triggering lawsuits from both sides.

While Apple ultimately emerged victorious in the US Supreme Court ruling in January 2024, things are looking different in the EU. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) has mandated changes that give developers more freedom when offering their apps through Apple’s App Store. This new regulation paves the way for Epic Games to re-enter the iOS market with its Epic Games Store and Fortnite.

Epic Games recently announced that it has submitted its store and game for review by Apple as part of the necessary notarization process. If all goes well, fans can expect to see Fortnite back on iOS devices in the EU within a few months. However, this process may face delays due to potential friction between Epic Games and Apple.

Stay tuned as we await further updates on this exciting development between these tech giants. Phones Canada will continue to monitor this story closely and keep you informed every step of the way.
