With the upcoming release of Android 14, Google is rumored to be venturing into satellite connectivity, following in the footsteps of iOS and Harmony. According to reports, the Android 14 update will introduce the necessary software for satellite connectivity, while phone manufacturers will handle the hardware requirements.
The speculation suggests that Pixel and Galaxy handsets will be the first Android devices to support this feature. The independent Team Pixel FanClub revealed that these models will be equipped with the required hardware to enable satellite connectivity. Additionally, Neïl Rahmouni, a Top Google Developer Online Contributor, shared on Twitter that Google Messages might utilize Garmin Response for the Satellite Emergency SOS. If this is the case, emergency satellite messages could be accessible in over 150 countries.
This development would surpass Apple’s current satellite connectivity service, which is only available in a limited number of countries. Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite has already demonstrated its value by saving numerous lives.
However, Rahmouni urges caution and advises against assuming that a partnership between Google and Garmin has been confirmed until an official announcement is made by Google. As of now, there is no information regarding the launch date of this feature or which Android devices will support it. Stay tuned for updates.
