It’s been a year since the announcement of the Magic Compose feature at the Google I/O 2023 conference in May 2023. At first, it was only available in the US and came with limitations, being exclusive to English on Android phones with US SIM cards. However, there are now gradual changes as Magic Compose is becoming available internationally, although at a slow pace.
So what is Magic Compose? This feature uses AI to generate text messages for users. By tapping a sparkled pencil icon in the text field, users can access different style options for their message reply, such as Remix, Excited, Chill, Shakespeare, Lyrical, Formal, or Short. In order to provide relevant suggestions, the feature sends up to 20 previous messages to Google’s servers, including emojis, reactions, and URLs. However, messages with attachments, voice messages, or images are not included. Google assures users that their messages will not be stored or used to train machine learning models.
After the initial rollout in the US, reports have emerged of Magic Compose being available in France and the UK. Eligible users need to be in the Play Store betas for Google Messages and Carrier Services, signed into their Google Account, and over 18 years old to access Magic Compose. Additionally, Google One Premium members have priority access to Magic Compose as more spots become available.
