Google is known for making changes to its various platforms, often without any apparent reason or benefit. Recently, the web version of YouTube received an update that changed the square corners of thumbnails and the video player to rounded corners. However, this change was met with negative feedback from users. Now, it seems that YouTube is implementing the same rounded corners on the Android app.
According to a screenshot obtained by Android Police, the thumbnails on the YouTube Android app will now feature rounded corners. This modification results in a brighter white background, which may prompt some users to switch to the Dark theme. To do this, simply open the YouTube app on your Android device, tap on the profile picture located in the upper right corner, go to Settings > General > Appearance, and choose your preferred theme.
As of now, the rounded corners haven’t been widely rolled out to Android devices. I personally haven’t encountered this change on my Pixel 6 Pro running on Android 14 Beta 5.3. On the YouTube website, the rounded corners are not visible when watching a video in full screen or Theater mode. However, they reappear when returning to the Default view. It remains uncertain when Google will introduce this update to more Android users, and whether the iOS version of the YouTube app will also undergo similar changes.
If you haven’t installed the YouTube app on your Android phone yet, you can download it from the Google Play Store using this link. Alternatively, iOS users can access the app through this link.
That’s all the information we have for now. Stay tuned for more updates on changes and features coming to YouTube.
