Google’s New Anti-Theft AI Feature Aims to Combat Rising Phone Theft Rates in Canada

Phones Canada is excited to share the latest news from Google about their innovative anti-theft AI feature, which will soon be tested in Brazil. As the only country to win the FIFA World Cup five times, Brazil is no stranger to success – and now it will be at the forefront of testing this cutting-edge technology.

Here are some key details about Google’s new anti-theft feature:

– The feature will be available on Android phones, as Google continues to lead the way in smartphone technology.
– The AI component of the feature will work to identify when a phone has been stolen and automatically lock the device’s screen.
– During the trial phase, three types of screen locks will be introduced:
– The first type will use AI to recognize suspicious movements associated with theft and lock the screen.
– The second option allows users to remotely lock their screens by entering their phone number and completing a security challenge from another device.
– The third mode will automatically lock the screen if the device is offline for an extended period.

These innovative features will first be rolled out to Brazilian users with Android phones running version 10 or higher starting in July. Google plans to gradually introduce them to users in other countries throughout the year.

This initiative comes in response to a significant increase in phone theft in Brazil. In 2022, nearly 1 million cellphones were reported stolen, representing a 16.6% increase from the previous year, according to data from the 2023 Brazilian Public Security Yearbook.

To combat this issue, the Brazilian government recently launched an app called Celular Seguro, allowing users to report stolen phones and block access using another trusted device. So far, approximately 2 million people have registered with the app, leading to 50,000 blocked phones as of last month – a promising step towards reducing phone theft in Brazil.

Stay tuned for more updates on Google’s anti-theft AI feature as it continues its testing phase and prepares for a wider rollout around the world. At Phones Canada, we are committed to keeping our readers informed about the latest developments in telecommunications technology.
