If your phone arrives with this error, Google is ready to deliver you a new Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro

Some Pixel 8 series buyers are complaining that their device was shipped to them with an unlocked bootloader. This is great news for those who like to install custom firmware or want root access to their device. Most Android phones come with a locked bootloader by default, which voids the warranty and makes personal data more susceptible to theft.

While the number of units with an unlocked bootloader is small, this issue is affecting both Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro units. One Reddit user, with the username kc_casey, shared their experience stating that they received their Pixel 8 Pro with an unlocked bootloader warning. Google advised them to return the device for a replacement.

In the past, having a phone with an unlocked bootloader was seen as valuable, but nowadays, the number of people flashing custom ROMs has decreased. With security concerns and personal data being stored on phones, the ability to further customize the handset is outweighed by the need for security.

Another Reddit user, asbo_2000, shared their experience of receiving a Pixel 8 with an unlocked bootloader. They mentioned contacting customer service and getting a replacement. This is their first time experiencing such an issue with a Nexus/Pixel phone.

Pixel 8 series users who received a phone with an unlocked bootloader are greeted with the following message on their first boot: “The bootloader is unlocked and software integrity cannot be guaranteed. Any data stored on the device may be available to attackers. Do not store any sensitive data on the device.”

Although it is possible to lock the bootloader, Google is offering to replace affected units. When it comes to sensitive data, there is no room for uncertainty. If you need to contact Google regarding an unlocked bootloader on your Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro.
