Is Samsung’s flagship, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, losing its superpowers with the absence of a 10x zoom camera?

Galaxy S24 Ultra Zoom Camera Changes

According to a reliable tipster, the zoom system on the Galaxy S24 Ultra will be changing for the first time in three years. The new camera setup will divide opinions as it includes a 10MP camera with 3x zoom and a new 50MP camera with 5x zoom. This means that Samsung is allegedly removing the iconic 10x optical snapper that it has been using for the past three years.

The question is, is this a downgrade or a smarter choice? The answer might surprise you. Recent comparison tests have shown that a phone with a 3x camera, the folding OnePlus Open, actually beats the Galaxy S23 Ultra in 10x zoom photography. This is due to OnePlus’ image processing capabilities and higher resolution 50MP camera. The OnePlus Open can take better zoom photos at 3x, 5x, 6x, and even 10x zoom.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s rumored 5x zoom camera could be the right call based on the results of these tests. While the 10x zoom camera used to be a standout feature, it no longer feels as special as it once did. Other phones have found ways to match or surpass its performance with shorter zoom lenses.

There are a few reasons why Samsung might be making this change. One reason is to make the Galaxy S24 Ultra more like the Pixel 8 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, both of which have 5x zoom cameras that produce excellent portrait mode photos. Another reason is that 10x optical zoom is difficult to stabilize when taking photos or recording videos.

The rumored 5x zoom camera in the Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to be of much higher quality compared to the 10x zoom camera in the S23 Ultra. It will have a larger sensor and a wider aperture, which should result in better photo quality. The Pixel 8 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max also have 5x zoom cameras, but the OnePlus Open’s 3x zoom camera is still superior due to its wider aperture and larger sensor.

Overall, while the removal of the 10x zoom camera may initially be met with criticism, it could be a smart move for Samsung in the long run. The 5x zoom camera with improved optics should provide better image quality and be more versatile for everyday photography. Samsung will need to optimize the camera to take full advantage of its capabilities, but if done right, it could result in stunning photos.
