Phones Canada team is excited to announce that MediaTek has successfully developed its first chip using TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm process. This achievement positions MediaTek ahead of its main competitor, Qualcomm, who is still a few years away from launching their own 3nm chips.
What makes this development even more impressive is that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 is rumored to be equipped with 3nm chips, indicating that the Cupertino-based company has secured TSMC’s entire 2023 stock. This places MediaTek in the spotlight as one of the pioneers in this advanced chip technology.
In a statement, MediaTek expressed their commitment to using the most advanced technology to create innovative products that enhance our lives. They praised TSMC’s consistent and high-quality manufacturing capabilities, which allow MediaTek to showcase their superior chip design in flagship devices. This ultimately brings the highest performance and quality solutions to customers worldwide, elevating the overall user experience in the flagship market.
The 3nm process technology offers significant improvements over previous iterations. It delivers enhanced performance, power efficiency, and yield, catering to both high-performance computing and mobile applications. MediaTek highlights that compared to TSMC’s N5 process, the 3nm technology offers up to 18 percent speed improvement at the same power, a 32 percent reduction in power consumption at the same speed, and approximately 60 percent increase in logic density.
Although consumers will have to wait until the second half of 2024 to see MediaTek’s first flagship chipset utilizing TSMC’s 3nm process in phones and tablets, this still puts them ahead of the competition. Unless Qualcomm makes an earlier announcement, MediaTek is set to dominate the market with their advanced chip technology.
