Google Releases September Security Update for Pixel Phones

The latest update for Pixel phones has been released by Google. However, it’s not the highly anticipated Android 14 update. Instead, it is the September security update (2023-09-01) which is now available for the Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel Fold. If you haven’t received the update on your compatible Pixel device yet, don’t worry, it should arrive soon. As for my Pixel 6 Pro running Android 14 Beta 5.3, I am still waiting for the update.

The update doesn’t bring any new features or bug fixes, as it only includes security patches for Pixel users. According to Google, all supported Pixel devices running Android 13 will receive this software update starting today. The rollout will continue over the next week, depending on carrier and device. Users will receive a notification once the OTA (Over-the-Air) update is available for their device. To download the update, go to Settings > System > System update and follow the instructions provided.

Regarding the release of Android 14, it seems that we will have to wait until the unveiling of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro on October 4th. Initially, Google had planned to release Android 14 in August. There were speculations that Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1, which marks the beginning of the Pixel Feature Drops Beta program, would also be released today. However, this update might be launched later this week.

If you are currently using the Android 14 Beta program and wish to exit without joining the QPR Beta or wiping your phone, follow these steps. Starting tomorrow, wait for the Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1 update but do not install it. Instead, opt out of the Android 14 Beta program when the QPR Beta is offered to you. You will receive an update to downgrade your phone to Android 13. Do NOT install it. From this point, wait for the stable Android 14 OTA update to arrive and then install it.
