Samsung Reigns Supreme: Leading Global Smartphone Brand in Q1 2024, Surpassing Apple

Samsung emerged as the top smartphone manufacturer globally in the first quarter of 2024, shipping one in every five phones during this period. Despite a 6% annual increase in shipments, there was an 8% decline compared to the previous quarter. This performance allowed Samsung to secure a 20% share of the smartphone market, surpassing Apple’s 17% share.

Apple also had its own victories, with the iPhone’s Average Selling Price hitting a record high for any first quarter, driven by strong demand for the iPhone 15 Pro models. Xiaomi claimed the third position with a significant year-over-year growth of 34%, accounting for 14% of global smartphone shipments in Q1.

The report by Counterpoint Research also highlighted other key players in the market:
– Oppo held an 8% market share
– Vivo followed closely with a 7% share
– Honor secured a 6% slice

Overall, there were 296.9 million smartphone units shipped globally in Q1 2024, marking a 6% increase compared to the same period last year. Smartphone sales revenue also reached a new first-quarter record with a 7% year-over-year growth.

In North America, iPhones dominated with a commanding 52% share of smartphone shipments, followed by Samsung at 31%. Together, Apple and Samsung accounted for an impressive 83% of the market in North America. In Europe, Samsung led with a 32% market share compared to Apple’s 25%.

Latin America saw Samsung leading with a notable 31% market share, while Motorola trailed at second place with only a 21% share. Apple and Xiaomi shared fourth place with each holding a modest 6%. In MEA (Middle East and Africa), Samsung maintained its lead with a substantial 22% market share followed by Tecno at second place with a 16% share. Apple ranked sixth with just a meager 5%.

In Asia, Xiaomi claimed the top spot during Q1 with a strong showing of a15 % market share. Vivo, Oppo, and Apple followed closely at second place each holding14%. Samsung secured fifth place with12%, while Honor closed out the top six spots with an8 % slice of the market.
