Surprise Safari Update Sparks Controversy Among UK Newspapers Over Ad-Blocking Feature

AppleInsider recently uncovered a potential new feature in Safari that has UK newspapers up in arms. This upcoming feature will give users the ability to selectively block online ads, causing concern among media groups in the UK.

The feature, unofficially named Web Eraser, is expected to be part of iOS 18 and could be announced at the upcoming WWDC. The UK’s News Media Association has reportedly sent a letter to Apple expressing their worries about how this feature could impact journalism and content creators’ ability to fund their work.

While the feature is still unconfirmed, reports suggest that it will utilize generative AI technology to remove specific parts of web pages, likely targeting ads. Apple has not publicly responded to the concerns raised by the News Media Association but may address them during the WWDC event scheduled for June 10-14, 2024.

Stay tuned for more updates on this potential Safari feature as we await official confirmation from Apple. Phones Canada will continue to monitor the situation and provide you with the latest news and insights on telecommunications industry developments.
