TF International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate predictions, has stated in a recent tweet that we should not expect any new iPad models to be released before the end of this year. This comes as a disappointment to those who were hoping for a new iPad Air model to be unveiled shortly after the iPhone-focused event.
The current iPad Air, which was released on March 18, 2022, features the powerful Apple M1 chip and a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina (LCD) display. Rumors of an iPad Air with an OLED panel have been circulating since 2021, but Kuo’s statement suggests that we will have to wait longer for this upgrade.
During the pandemic, tablet sales, especially iPad sales, experienced a surge in demand as more people relied on them for work and entertainment. However, as the pandemic situation improves, tablet sales have been declining. In the fiscal third quarter, which ended in June, iPad revenue declined by 19.8% year-over-year to $5.79 billion.
While we may not see a new iPad release this year, there have been rumors that an OLED iPad Air and the first OLED iPad Pro models will be introduced next year. Apple has reportedly signed deals with Samsung and LG’s display units to supply OLED panels for the rumored 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models expected in 2024. For the next iPad Air, Apple may choose to utilize OLED panels from either or both of these suppliers or opt for panels from BOE.
The upcoming iPad Air is likely to be powered by the M2 chipset, which has been designed by Apple and built by TSMC using its advanced N5P 5nm process node. This chipset will offer significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency, thanks to its 20 billion transistors.
Although it’s disappointing that no new iPad models will be released this year, we can look forward to the launch of the OLED iPad Air next year. Patience will be rewarded as Apple continues to innovate and introduce exciting new products.
