Google has decided to stick with Samsung for its upcoming Pixel 9’s Tensor G4 chip, which will also power the Pixel Fold 2. This decision comes after initial plans to switch to TSMC were reconsidered. Recent reports suggest that Google believes customers will be pleased with this choice.
According to a report from Korean outlet fnnews, the Tensor G4 will be based on Samsung’s latest 4nm process, known as the ‘3rd generation 4nm low-power process node.’ This aligns with the Exynos 2400 chip used in some versions of the Galaxy S24, which also utilizes the same process. The Tensor G4 is rumored to incorporate Fan-out Wafer Level Package (FOWLP) technology for improved thermal management and enhanced power efficiency.
The success of Samsung’s Exynos 2400 chip, which outperforms the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in certain aspects, has contributed to Google’s decision to opt for Samsung’s latest manufacturing technology for the Tensor G4. This move is expected to boost performance compared to its predecessor, the Tensor G3.
In addition to sharing the same manufacturing node, reports suggest that the Tensor G4 will draw inspiration from the Exynos 2400 as an eight-core chip utilizing ARM’s latest cores. While Google was initially considering TSMC for this year’s chip production, low order volume led them back to Samsung. However, it is likely that Google will collaborate with TSMC for next year’s Tensor G5.
Ultimately, Google’s choice of Samsung for the Tensor G4 was not solely influenced by the success of the Galaxy S24. Despite this connection, it appears that Google felt confident in their decision given current market conditions.
