Apple’s iMessage escapes potential regulatory scrutiny in Europe due to its smaller size

The EU has been cracking down on tech giants to promote competition in the market. Apple, along with other big tech companies, has been under investigation for potential anti-competitive practices. However, Bloomberg reports that the EU might not regulate iMessage after all.

iMessage, along with other Apple services, has been under scrutiny by the EU. However, after a five-month investigation, it has been reported that iMessage may not be regulated for anti-competitiveness in Europe because it is not as big there as it is in the U.S., especially when it comes to business users. However, this information has not been officially confirmed and comes from unnamed sources “close to the matter”. The investigation is set to conclude in February 2024, so there is still time for things to change.

Despite this potential leniency towards iMessage, Apple is still facing other regulations in the EU. The Digital Markets Act, for example, will require Apple to open up iOS for rival app stores, a change that may come into effect as soon as next year. These investigations and regulations could lead to significant changes in how big tech companies operate in the EU and potentially even globally.

Overall, these efforts are aimed at creating a more competitive and fair market, with the potential to impact various aspects of technology and consumer products.
