Apple is reportedly testing a new way for iPhone users to easily remove the glue holding down their device’s batteries, allowing for simpler battery replacements. This self-service option would give iPhone owners more flexibility in maintaining their handsets, alongside the traditional Apple Store or authorized service center routes.

Currently, replacing an iPhone battery requires specialized tools rented from Apple, making the process challenging due to the strong adhesive used. However, Apple is working on a new system called “electrically-induced adhesive debonding,” which uses electricity to quickly and easily detach the battery from the device’s chassis.

While this upcoming battery removal system will improve upon the existing process, it won’t be as straightforward as earlier smartphone models with replaceable batteries like the Motorola DROID from 2009. Apple’s initiative aligns with a new EU law mandating user-friendly battery removal for smartphones by 2027, prompting tech companies to adapt before facing penalties.
