AT&T Partners with AST SpaceMobile to Launch 5 Satellites for Enhanced Telecommunications Coverage

Phones Canada is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership between AT&T and satellite provider AST SpaceMobile. The collaboration aims to revolutionize connectivity by bringing a space-based broadband network directly to cell phones.

This summer, five satellites will be launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, into low-Earth orbit to kickstart the satellite commercial service. Here’s what the joint statement reveals:

– AT&T and AST SpaceMobile have inked a definitive commercial agreement to offer space-based broadband network services directly to everyday cell phones until 2030. This monumental step builds upon their previous collaboration under a Memorandum of Understanding.
– These initial five satellites will pave the way for groundbreaking moments in 2023, including the first voice call, text, and video call via space between everyday smartphones.
– Chris Sambar, Head of Network for AT&T, will join AST SpaceMobile’s board of directors to further enhance connectivity and ensure continental U.S. satellite coverage becomes a reality.

Jeff McElfresh, Chief Operating Officer at AT&T, emphasizes that this innovative technology is designed to complement their existing mobile network and provide seamless connectivity in previously unreachable areas. This strategic agreement marks AT&T’s commitment to leveraging emerging satellite technologies for consumer benefit.

In the near future, consumers can look forward to enhanced connectivity in remote locations such as wilderness areas, rural highways, and US national park lands. With this pioneering initiative, AT&T is leading the way in expanding telecommunications reach across the country.
