CES announces all the latest Google navigation app updates, making cars smarter with Android technology

At CES 2024, the focus is on the advancements in technology, with one standout area being the impact of Android on the automotive industry. Android Auto and cars with Google built-in are receiving updates and forming new partnerships, promising an enhanced driving experience.

Navigation

Electric vehicle owners will benefit from real-time battery information on Google Maps, starting with the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning. This update allows drivers to view the approximate battery level upon reaching their destination, recommended charging locations along the journey, as well as the duration required for charging. Additionally, users can now send their Google Maps itinerary from their mobile device directly to their vehicle’s entertainment system.

Stay connected and entertained

Chrome integration is in beta for some Polestar and Volvo cars, allowing users to browse the web or access bookmarks while the vehicle is stopped. Furthermore, cars with Google built-in will offer PBS KIDS and Crunchyroll apps, providing entertainment for passengers. The Weather Channel app will also be available, offering hourly forecasts, follow-me alerts, and “Trip View” radar right on the screen.

The future of Android in cars

Android’s compatibility with a wide range of car brands and its installation in over 200 million vehicles worldwide demonstrates its promising future. More carmakers, including Nissan, Ford, Lincoln, and Porsche, are set to join the Google built-in ecosystem. Additionally, the functionality of digital car keys will expand, providing the convenience of unlocking, locking, and starting the car using an Android phone, as well as a secure way to share keys with others.
