Enhanced Nintendo Switch Update Eliminates X Integration • Phones Canada Blog

Nintendo has recently made the decision to discontinue support for X (formerly Twitter) on its popular Switch console. This move follows similar actions taken by PlayStation and Xbox, making it the final major gaming hardware to cut ties with X integrations.

Through the latest 18.1.0 software update, Nintendo users can no longer link their X account to their Switch. This update, released on June 10th, brought minor stability improvements along with the removal of X integrations.

Key changes included in the update are:
– Inability to “Post to Twitter” when sharing from the ‘Album’ option on Nintendo Switch.
– Disabling of posting Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshots from the Album in the ‘Home’ menu to Smash World in the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app.
– Removal of the ability to link X from user settings.

Nintendo’s decision to end support for X was announced last month without a clear explanation. However, speculation suggests that it may be related to changes in X’s API access. In 2023, X introduced tiered subscriptions for API access, with larger-scale options like the ‘Enterprise tier’ costing at least $42,000 USD per month.

Both PlayStation and Xbox have also discontinued their integrations with X in 2023, although they did not explicitly cite API updates as the reason behind their decisions.

The end of support for X on Nintendo Switch marks a significant shift in gaming platforms’ relationships with social media integrations. Stay tuned for more updates and news on telecommunications trends!
