Instagram testing the option to disable read receipts in direct messages

Instagram has reached a new milestone of one million paid subscriptions and has introduced new features for content creators. In its most recent update, the company announced that it is making a small yet significant modification to enhance privacy by introducing invisible read receipts.

Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Mosseri, the leaders of Meta and Instagram respectively, shared in their Instagram broadcast channels that testing has begun on a feature that allows users to turn off read receipts in direct messages. This is a crucial addition for those who are concerned about privacy and safety.

Adam Mosseri stated, “New test alert: You asked, we listened. We heard your feedback and have started testing a new feature that lets you turn read receipts off in your DMs. Soon, people will be able to choose when to let others see when they’ve read their messages.”

Zuckerberg added “If you’re someone who leaves people on read: your day has come. We’re testing the ability to turn off read receipts on Instagram DMs.” Once available, the feature can be turned on from Instagram’s privacy settings.

It’s essential to prioritize privacy on all social media platforms, but it’s especially important on Instagram, where users share a lot of personal information, such as photos and videos. Therefore, it is a positive trend to see Instagram continuing to roll out more privacy controls so that its users can protect themselves and enjoy the platform safely.
