Introducing Fairphone 5: Now with Eco-Friendly Design, Enhanced Performance, and Much More

Phones Canada is excited to introduce the latest repairable smartphone from Fairphone: the Fairphone 5. This next-generation device features an upgraded display, battery, and software update support, making it a phone that is in line with the latest technology and trends in 2023.

One of the standout features of the Fairphone 5 is its modular design, which allows users to easily swap out parts such as the screen, battery, camera modules, loudspeakers, and USB-C port. This means you can repair and personalize your phone according to your needs. Additionally, Fairphone promises a solid 8 years of software and security updates, ensuring longevity and sustainability.

The Fairphone 5 boasts a 6.46-inch Full HD+ OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The display is made of Corning Gorilla Glass and is easily replaceable if needed.

In terms of design, the Fairphone 5 is made from more than 70% fair or recycled materials, with a focus on sustainability. Nothing in the phone is glued down, allowing for easy DIY repairs. The phone also comes in three colors: matte black, sky blue, and transparent edition. The back cover is made from 100% recycled plastic.

When it comes to the camera, the Fairphone 5 features a dual-camera setup on the back. The main camera is a Sony IMX800, and there’s also an ultrawide camera with an IMX 858 sensor that can capture super wide shots at 121°. The front selfie camera is 50MP, and all three camera modules can be replaced.

Under the hood, the Fairphone 5 is powered by a Qualcomm QCM6490 chipset, a version of the Snapdragon 782G designed for IoT and industry use. It is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, with the option to expand storage using a microSD card.

The phone runs on Android 13 and comes with a promise from Fairphone for five major OS updates and eight years of security patches. It is even aiming to extend the support to a decade. The Fairphone 5 also features Bluetooth 5.2, dual SIM support with nano-SIM and eSIM, dual speakers, IP55 rating for water and dust resistance, NFC technology, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It is backed by a solid 5-year warranty.

In terms of battery, the Fairphone 5 packs a larger 4,200mAh battery compared to its predecessor. According to Fairphone, the battery can last up to 459 hours in idle mode and throughout the day with active usage. It supports fast charging, reaching 50% charge in just 30 minutes with a 30W charging speed. The battery is replaceable by the user.

Fairphone takes pride in the ethical and sustainable materials used in the Fairphone 5’s battery. It includes cobalt sourced from mines with improved working conditions, fair lithium, 100% Fairtrade gold, 100% recycled tin solder paste, 80% recycled steel and nickel alloy, and 75% recycled plastics.

The Fairphone 5 is available for pre-order with a starting price of €699.00 ($761). Shipping will begin on September 14, depending on the color choice. Currently, the Fairphone 5 is only being released in Europe, but considering the launch of the Fairphone 4 in the US, it is possible that the Fairphone 5 will also be released in the US in the future.

Overall, the Fairphone 5 offers a sustainable and repairable smartphone option with upgraded performance and longevity. It is a great choice for those who prefer eco-friendly products and value the ability to replace and repair their own devices.
