iPad Line to Introduce a 13-inch iPad Air and LCD iPad Pro, Eclipsing iPhone Fragmentation

Apple is reportedly considering increasing the screen size of its iPad Air to 12.9 inches, matching the size of the iPad Pro. This information comes from Taiwanese supply chain sources via Digitimes, supporting previous rumors about a larger iPad Air. According to these sources, Apple has postponed the launch of the new iPad lineup as it reevaluates its screen options. While the company recently unveiled the Apple Pencil 3 with a USB-C port, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who had previously predicted an October launch, now suggests that this may not be the case.

Sources suggest that the new iPad Air may be released in the first quarter of next year, alongside an iPad Pro lineup for 2024. Interestingly, both the iPad Air and iPad Pro models are expected to feature LCD screens, in contrast to the current iPad Pro models’ expensive mini-LED displays. This change may help reduce costs and assess market demand for an iPad Pro with LCD technology. The 12.9-inch iPad Air, despite sharing the same screen size as the larger iPad Pro, is likely to offer fewer premium features and specifications, such as refresh rate dynamics, brightness, color gamut coverage, and stylus functions.

Furthermore, Apple is rumored to be developing a foldable iPad Pro with a 20-inch display, possibly set for release next year. If this turns out to be true, it would significantly increase the average screen diagonal of the iPad Pro lineup.

In summary, Apple seems to be adopting a strategy of fragmenting its iPad line, mirroring its approach to the upcoming iPhone 16 series. This fragmentation includes differentiation between Pro and non-Pro models, as well as distinguishing each of the four iPhone family members through variations in screen size, display, processor, and camera specifications. The pricing details for the eventual 12.9-inch iPad Air are yet to be disclosed, but given the market demand for larger tablets, Apple may find success if the price is competitive.
