Nintendo is making big waves in the gaming world with an increase in sales projections for its popular Switch console. The company now aims to sell 15.5 million units in the current fiscal year, surpassing its previous estimate of 15 million units. This announcement comes on the heels of Nintendo’s impressive financial performance in the fiscal third quarter (October to December).
During this period, Nintendo reported net sales of 598.6 billion Japanese yen ($4 billion) and net profit of 136.7 billion Japanese yen, exceeding LSEG estimates. Despite a slight decrease in net sales compared to the previous year, net profit saw an 18% increase, showcasing the company’s resilience and continued success.
One of the key factors contributing to Nintendo’s recent momentum is the release of the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” and a flagship Zelda game last year. These highly-anticipated releases revitalized interest in the Switch and led to increased sales of the aging console. In fact, Nintendo disclosed that the “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” game, launched in October, had a promising start with sales of 11.96 million units. The Mario movie also contributed to increased sales of older titles such as “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.”
Looking ahead, Nintendo has revised its financial forecasts for the current fiscal year, anticipating net sales of 1.63 trillion Japanese yen and net profit of 440 billion yen, up from previous estimates of 1.58 trillion yen and 420 billion yen, respectively.
In addition to these impressive numbers, fans and investors are eagerly anticipating new games featuring characters from the Mario universe, including Donkey Kong and Princess Peach, set to be released in the upcoming quarter.
Despite ongoing success with the Switch, speculation persists about the potential release of a successor to the flagship console. Analysts anticipate a new Nintendo Switch to debut this year.
