Potential disappointment: Apple Watch X may lack expected innovation

Recently, Apple has introduced its latest iPhone 15 series and the Apple Watch Series 9. While these devices offer new features and enhancements, they also share similarities with their previous iterations. Interestingly, it seems that this sentiment might extend beyond just the latest releases.

According to prominent analyst and Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo, the upcoming Apple Watch in 2024 is unlikely to bring significant innovative experiences. Kuo suggests that the 2024 model will not incorporate microLED technology for its display and will skip a blood glucose monitoring feature.

Kuo speculates that the inclusion of a microLED display and blood glucose monitoring feature might or might not happen on the Apple Watch Series 11 in 2025, depending on technological advancements. It is worth mentioning that Kuo’s statement does not explicitly refer to the Apple Watch Series 10 or Apple Watch X. The exact naming strategy for the wearable is still uncertain (the tenth-generation iPhone took a bold branding approach, being marketed as the iPhone X, which turned out to be successful).

Kuo’s statement contradicts a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who hinted at an Apple Watch 10 release in 2024. Gurman’s report mentioned a redesigned magnetic strap mechanism for the alleged tenth-anniversary release. Furthermore, there were discussions about Apple working on a microLED display and blood pressure monitoring, although these features were not directly tied to the Apple Watch 10 release.

Aside from these predictions, Kuo also forecasts a decline of approximately 15% year-on-year in Apple Watch shipments in 2023, estimating 36–38 million units. In contrast, Apple experienced a 17% year-on-year increase in shipments in 2022, thanks to strong sales of the Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra, and SE 2022. Only time will tell if Kuo’s predictions hold true.

As we eagerly anticipate further developments, it remains unclear how the Apple Watch Series 10/Apple Watch X will shape up in the coming months. Rest assured, we will keep you updated with all the latest information. Stay tuned for updates.
