Protecting Your Phone: App Store Prevents $7 Billion in Fraudulent Transactions

In the ongoing battle against fraud, Apple’s App Store has achieved a significant victory by preventing over $7 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions over the past four years. Since its establishment in 2008, Apple has continuously invested in cutting-edge technologies to ensure user safety and promote developer innovation within its ecosystem.

As digital threats evolve, Apple remains proactive in expanding its antifraud measures. By utilizing sophisticated tools and dedicated teams, the company combats fraudulent activities on a daily basis. From 2020 to 2023, Apple successfully thwarted over $7 billion in potential fraud, with 2023 alone accounting for more than $1.8 billion.

Apple’s latest fraud prevention analysis for 2023 showcases impressive results. The App Store rejected over 1.7 million app submissions for failing to meet the platform’s strict standards and terminated nearly 374 million accounts due to fraud-related activities.

In efforts to prevent fraudulent account creations, Apple terminated close to 118,000 developer accounts in 2023 and rejected more than 91,000 developer enrollments due to fraud concerns. The company also took action against fraudulent customer accounts by blocking over 153 million account creations and deactivating nearly 374 million accounts for fraudulent activities in 2023.

Apple’s commitment to trust extends beyond the App Store as it blocked over 47,000 illegitimate apps from pirate storefronts in the past year alone. Additionally, the company stopped nearly 3.8 million attempts to install or launch illicitly distributed apps through the Developer Enterprise Program.

The App Review team at Apple consists of over 500 experts who evaluate every app submission meticulously. In 2023 alone, they reviewed nearly 6.9 million app submissions and rejected over 1.7 million for various violations.

With a dedicated focus on user safety and integrity within its ecosystem, Apple continues to lead the way in combating fraud while fostering innovation among developers on the App Store platform.
